Cape Buffalo Study

This is an 8-by-10 oil study of a buffalo, framed and done in preparation for a larger pastel piece. I observed this buffalo in South Luangwa Valley, Zambia, during a safari with my wife. That evening, I started feeling pretty ill—eventually coming down with a strong fever over the next couple of days. Despite that, I managed to get some photos and sketches. This study is a first step, and I plan to work these buffalo into a larger painting down the line. The experience stuck with me, even with the fever.
